In an age where cheap desktop publishing software has fooled the average person into thinking they can do anything with their home computer and ten minutes, it’s difficult to find a real professional. Layout work requires meticulous attention to detail, a sense of composition and artistic sense of space, and the ability to work to constantly changing deadlines (and client demands). Publishing may have a new front end, but it’s an old industry with its own jargon, technique, and idiosyncracies. When you’re busy editing copy or worrying about cover blurbs, you don’t want to find yourself in a position of learning too late that your publisher can’t print your piece because you used a strange font, or your offsets are wrong.
As with many things, preparing a document for publication is best left to experts. I feel fortunate that I found one such expert in Dave Bryant, whose patience, precision and professional demeanor made all the difference in making my novel Alysha’s Fall beautiful and easy to read.
