Portfolio of Sample Book and Booklet ProjectsOver the years, I have handled a wide variety of projects, more than can be perused quickly or easily. As a result, the examples provided here are representative rather than exhaustive. I would be happy to answer any questions or inquiries about particular types of projects, even if there is no direct equivalent among the selections on display. As well, professional references are available on request. Fiction or nonfiction, large or small, covers and interiors, books are a special favorite. I have worked on dozens, including novels, short-story collections, memoirs, souvenir convention program books, instructional books about computer software, and school textbooks.
The simple, quiet elegance of novels or short stories may not seem challenging, but finding a design that matches the mood or setting of the narrative yet does not draw undue attention to itself can be a significant balancing act.

Hogarth Long after a catastrophic change in climate precipitated the collapse of its predecessor, a Bronze-Age alien culture struggles to repopulate its harsh environment, and a few extraordinary individuals challenge the grim measures imposed on the three sexes in the name of survival. Partaking of both fantasy and science fiction, this novel of extremes called for a balanced, dignified treatment that integrated the brush-inked glyphs symbolizing the books four parts. Published by Amsea Publishing Group, Campbell, California Written by Lincoln and Lee Taiz, with illustrations by Lee Taiz This childrens science fiction-fantasy novel was a charming and very educational project, as it involved not simply design and lay-out but project management. Among other things, the former included accommodating a music CD of works inspired by the story and the latter included lessons on obtaining ISBNs and Library of Congress control numbers. Available through Amazon.
Go to top of Fiction sectionNonfiction is a broad category, with a wide variety of requirements. Memoirs may be as relaxed as fiction, but instructional books with their figures, tables, and sidebars generally are more challenging, and textbooks can be genuinely difficult.

Published by Anthropomorphic Arts and Education, Inc. for Further Confusion, Milpitas, California
For several years I have been a staff member of Further Confusion, holding the post of Conbook Lead. In that role I act as publisher, editor, and designer of the souvenir program book, copies of which are given to all attendees. Coordinating open submissions from illustrators and authors and working with other staff departments providing editorial material—often at the last minute—requires patience, diplomacy, and ingenuity. The samples shown are from two program books.
Go to top of Nonfiction sectionA bureaucratic tool for a bureaucratic process, this document laid out a road map to guide future decision-making. Each major service type was covered in its own color-coded chapter, and each chapter was laid out in accordance with a stringently-defined design brief. Even so, considerable adjustment and redesign of that brief was required before the job was done.

Published by Trafford, Victoria, British Columbia Written by L. M. Flowers Cover artwork by Christina Smudge Hanson This slim (0.1" spine) volume of poetry needed a simple, inexpensive cover, quickly, before going to press. The general theme of the front cover art and choice of typeface were defined by the author. The cover art was commissioned, and the leaves-on-desktop background was created new using texture generation and Photoshop.

Diagrams and illustrations for marketing booksThis artwork was created for a couple of books on marketing; the first set of illustrations so pleased the author that more artwork was requested for a second. As the interiors of the books were printed using only a single color, the art had to be grayscale, and tint rather than color became the primary means of differentiating items. Most of the art was based on sketches provided by the author. 1. Illustrating a discontinuity of thought.
2. A flow diagram. Horizontal version was created first;
3. Another flow diagram.
4. A cycle diagram.
5. A set of charts.
6. A table.
